This DIY foaming hand soap is easy to make, inexpensive, and effective! Follow these simple steps to make this homemade foaming hand soap!
I’ve made hard bar soap, liquid soap, glycerin soap, and hot process soap, but DIY foaming hand soap always eluded me. Either it was very expensive to buy, or I’d either get it too strong and it would be difficult to rinse off, or too weak and not enough foam.
I finally discovered the secret!
Simple Ingredients
Liquid Soap
Of course, you’ll need soap for this DIY foaming hand soap recipe. You can make your own liquid soap or use one of the many on the market. You can also use a chunk of hard bar soap (grated), but you’ll need to experiment with the amounts if using this.
Oil
Good, moisturizing oil is needed to soften the skin since soap alone is drying. I use argan oil because of its superior ability to condition the skin. You could also use jojoba oil, sweet almond oil, fractionated coconut oil, grapeseed oil, or any other liquid oil. This is also a good place to use an infused oil, such as calendula infused oil like the one from this recipe.
Water
Water makes up a large part of this DIY foaming hand soap. I use distilled, reverse osmosis or filtered water to be sure there are no bacteria present.
Essential Oils
Essential oils are optional. You can use them to make an effective antibacterial soap or you can leave them out. I like grapefruit or lavender.
Secret Ingredient
The last ingredient and the secret to making great DIY foaming hand soap is one you would probably never think of – air! Without a cushion of air, the pump can’t make foam and the soap will just come out in a thin stream. So be sure you do not fill your soap container to the top with liquid ingredients.

Equipment
Ingredients
- 20 % air
- 20 % liquid soap
- 55 % filtered water
- 10-20 drops essential oil (like lavender essential oil)
- 1 tsp carrier oil (like argan oil)
Instructions
-
Pour all of the liquid ingredients into the DIY foaming hand soap dispenser and mix well.
-
Top with the pump, and screw it on tightly.
-
Shake to combine ingredients. Because there are no artificial emulsifiers in this recipe, the oils will gather on the top. Shake the container before each use. (It's still a really nice soap if you don't remember to shake it!)

I usually add a few drops of vegetable glycerin to help the oils incorporate better.
Debra Maslowski says
Great Idea, MsLindaW! I’ve always relied on the small amount of natural glycerin from the soap, but adding a few drops more will certainly help!
