Now that fall is here, it seems that pumpkin spice is king. From foods to air fresheners, pumpkin spice is everywhere! So naturally, I needed to find a way to incorporate it into my beauty routine.
What better way than with a skin-softening pumpkin spice body butter? Not only does this pumpkin spice body butter have a natural scent but is also very moisturizing. The perfect treat to end any day.
Pumpkin Spice Essential Oil Blend
When you think of replicating the smell of a spice blend with essential oils, take note of the ingredients used to make up the original blend.
To make pumpkin pie spice you will need cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger, cloves, and sometimes allspice. Cinnamon is at the forefront of the blend and I think that spice comes through the most. However, cloves, nutmeg, and ginger are also quintessential pumpkin pie aromas.
Blending essential oils is a little different than blending spices though. Some essential oils carry much stronger scents, while others are more subtle. You can use our pumpkin pie spice recipe, and I also really love this pumpkin spice essential oil blend from Mountain Rose Herbs.
My essential oil blend is a little different than both of these because I formulated it to be used topically on the skin. Cinnamon, clove, and nutmeg essential oils have low dermal maximums, which means that they should be used in very low dilutions on the skin to avoid irritation. I needed to come up with a low dilution recipe that carried enough aroma to be noticeable. I also added in some dried pumpkin pie spice to my recipe to help carry the aroma.
The overall essential oil blend in this recipe is at 1% dilution rate. Gentle enough to be used on the skin for most people. However, if you do notice any irritation, discontinue using immediately and rinse off with soapy water. This DIY is not for children, pregnant women, or persons with sensitive skin.

- 1/2 cup mango butter
- 1/2 cup cocoa butter
- 1/4 cup pumpkin seed oil
- 10 drops clove essential oil (Syzygium aromaticum)
- 10 drops cinnamon leaf essential oil (Cinnamomum zeylanicum)
- 10 drops ginger essential oil (Zingiber officinale)
- 10 drops nutmeg essential oil (Myristica fragrans)
- 20 drops cardamom essential oil (Elettaria cardamomum)
- 1 teaspoon pumpkin pie spice optional
Begin making your pumpkin spice body butter by slowly melting the cocoa butter in a double boiler (I used a glass pyrex measuring cup inside a small saucepan of water on low heat)
- Once cocoa butter is melted completely, add in mango butter and melt on low heat.
- Add in pumpkin seed oil and remove the glass Pyrex measuring cup from heat using a tea towel or potholder.
- Stir gently and allow to cool for 10-20 minutes
- Measure in essential oils and pumpkin pie spice (if using). Stir well to combine
- Allow the mixture to cool for about an hour until oils are just beginning to harden. You can speed this up by placing your pyrex measuring cup in the refrigerator, but mango butter tends to crystallize when melted quickly or when made to harden back up quickly.
- Once the mixture is beginning to solidify, whip with an electric handheld mixer with one beater attached or pour into a standing mixer and whip until light and fluffy. This can take a while, so I generally leave mine in the standing mixer. You can always put your butter back in the refrigerator to help it harden more quickly.
- Transfer into a sterilized mason jar or another container.
Store at room temperature for up to the shelf life of the oils (typically 6 months - 1 year).
